8 kilometres north east of Nairobi city centre is Dandora estate - the site of Nairobi’s main rubbish dump. On the dumpsite, covering 30 acres, 1,000 men, women & children eke out a living by scavenging for recyclables at great risk to their health.
Working in partnership with a local church, the Tent of Refuge provides a good meal, mentoring, Christian teaching and games to 100+ children each week helping to keep them off the dumpsite; it enables children to go to Primary and Secondary School by providing help with uniforms, tuition and lunches.
Boniface, the project manager, is the Children's Pastor of the All Nations Gospel Cathedral in Dandora. volunteers cook the fodd and teach and play with the children each Saturday.
Numbers attending have increased after the introduction of craft activities which the children have been enjoying!
