Project Cotex

A new Creative Solutions project in Burundi

Teenage girls miss school

  • Poor teenage girls in many African countries miss a week’s schooling every month due to their periods
  • Imported sanitary towels (cotex) are too expensive
  • They make do with rags which don’t work well
  • They get behind with their lessons and become discouraged.

                     Widows need an income

  • They like the dignity of making a living themselves
  • Most have small stalls selling agricultural items
  • They don’t always have much to sell

These are locally made, washable cotex which are being made by Eva & her team at GLO.She is willing to sell to the ladies at a discount but each widow needs £40 start up costs.

One kit consists of 8 re-usable pads, cost- price 8000FBu (£3.32), which are sold on at 10,000FBu (£4.15).

This is a win-win situation, where girls and women are able to buy the pads they need and can afford to buy and the widows get an income.

If cotex sell well on ladies’ stalls, we can buy machines and train them to do the manufacturing themselves.

Creative Solutions is empowering women in Burundi to be self-supporting.

Meeting January 2019 led by Joselyne and Alida

An information and awareness session on the use of local cotex and its benefits was held on 8th January 2019 at Fecabu church in Kinama, led by us. This meeting brought together more than 400 women, because it was held the day of the Fecabu Bujumbura women's crusade.

They were very interested and we agreed to make these cotex available for sale on 5th February. We hope to sell 100 cotex, all being well.

Next, we plan to meet the Turiwacu women for a similar introduction to the project.
